Space Elevator: Next Stop, Moon!

February 22nd, 2012

Arthus C Clark was not only the most influential science fiction writer of the 20th century but also is credited with various inventions like satellites and space travel. Indeed, most of what he wrote about as science fiction is now reality. One of his most bold visions was that of an elevator to outer orbit, from where we could launch space craft to distant planets at 1/10th the cost of rockets.

A space elevator is essentially a long cable extending from our planet’s surface into space with its center of mass at geostationary Earth orbit (GEO), 35,786 km in altitude. Electromagnetic vehicles traveling along the cable could serve as a mass transportation system for moving people, payloads, and power between Earth and space.

The Kardashian mentions how much attention is paid, not how much attention is deserved, so naming the unit after someone who is famous for being famous seems appropriate.

Brilliant. Ethan Zuckerman proposes measuring attention with a unit of measure called a Kardashian.

Excellent post about how Twitter in the end will be the big winner rather than Facebook.

Slow and steady always wins the race. Always. Its what I believe in when it comes to FRISKY and in everything else I try to do.

Watch the trailer for JJ Abrams’ new TV show Revolution. Looks good but then so did Alcatraz, which turned out to be a dud. Lets hope this lives up to the hype.

RIP so-called Social Readers. The Facebook Social Reader is the worst piece of crap ever. You click on an article your friend supposedly read and instead of taking you to the story, it takes you to an app. Thats when I closed the app and never went to the story. I wasnt the only one.

Fascinating story of American Airlines’ AAirPass - an all-you-can-fly elite program that you can purchase for $350,000. Considering how much you can travel (unlimited, first class), I think $350K is a great deal if you have the money. And time I guess.

The San Pelligrino 50 Best Restaurants in the World list is better than the Michelin list, and their 2012 ratings are right on. Per Se at 6 and not surprisingly Eleven Madison Park jumps from 24 to 10! It is that good. I expect it to be in the Top 5 next year for sure. Another one to watch out for next year: Atera in New York.
