A pair of scientists looked at the rate at which the complexity of life increases and then extrapolated back to a point of zero complexity. Its around 10 billion years. Turns out life might be even older than Earth itself.

However, if life takes 10 billion years to evolve to the level of complexity associated with humans, then we may be among the first, if not the first, intelligent civilisation in our galaxy. And this is the reason why when we gaze into space, we do not yet see signs of other intelligent species.

The White House was completely gutted and refurbished in 1950. Great photo essay!

Experts called the third floor of the White House “an outstanding example of a firetrap.” The result of a federally commissioned report found the mansion’s plumbing “makeshift and unsanitary,” while “the structural deterioration [was] in ‘appalling degree,’ and threatening complete collapse.” The congressional commission on the matter was considering the option of abandoning the structure altogether in favor of a built-from-scratch mansion, but President Truman lobbied for the restoration.

The area looked different than where we trained because we’re in Pakistan now. There are the lights, the city. There’s a golf course. And we’re, This is some serious Navy SEAL shit we’re going to do. This is so badass. My foot hit the ground and I was still running [the Bush quote] in my head. I don’t care if I die right now. This is so awesome. There was concern, but no fear.

An extra-ordinary piece of journalism in the March issue of esquire on the man that pulled the trigger on Bin Laden. This is riveting, must-read!

Imagine at some point that you go to the doctor for a physical, they do a blood draw but also a cheek swab and a few days later, you get a link to a site that shows you everything that is right and wrong with you, and can then help figure out how to make things better. Syapse is trying to do just that. Sign me up!

So while Obama was telling the world that “a decade of war is ending” and that “all souls on Earth shall have equal access to happiness” he was busy waging war and killing… Esquire takes a look at Obama’s double standards on war and how he is the first president in history to target individuals with no regard for the rule of law and UN conventions.

Sure, we as a nation have always killed people. A lot of people. But no president has ever waged war by killing enemies one by one, targeting them individually for execution, wherever they are. The Obama administration has taken pains to tell us, over and over again, that they are careful, scrupulous of our laws, and determined to avoid the loss of collateral, innocent lives. They’re careful because when it comes to waging war on individuals, the distinction between war and murder becomes a fine one. Especially when, on occasion, the individuals we target are Americans and when, in one instance, the collateral damage was an American boy.

Lets not kid ourselves here. The problem isnt Obama, or Bush, or even a “President Romney.” The problem is American society and economy that lives and thrives on war and killing.

A great lesson for those of you who want to learn more about how focal length affects your subjects and perception in photography. Ive always found the “sweet spot” to be around 5 feet and 35mm, but of course it all depends on the subject and the environment. But anything less than 35mm will make your subjects look weird.

How come I never thought of this: In the future, we will all get our mail and packages from drones. The author explains it thusly:

Here’s a simplified version of what I’m talking about:

I put package onto a landing pad at my home.
Drone arrives, takes package and flies away.
Drone delivers package to landing pad at delivery location.

Great idea, and I do think this can / will happen probably within the next 25 years. With the advent of self-driving cars, there’s nothing stopping UPS to deliver mail using those self-driving vehicles, or drones.
