LOST - A Series Review

May 25th, 2010
LOST

And so it ends…LOST is not one of those shows that you can talk about as a single entity / episode. It was never meant to be seen that way. So this review is for the entire series, and yes, also the finale.

I dont think I need to write up a long hashed out summary or a review of the finale. LOST’s final episode was as I had predicted and thats as good a summary as any.

But here are some thoughts off the top of my head:

  • + LOST was and always will be about the characters. Their human connections to each other. Their interconnections to each other (as I wrote 4 years ago). Their emotions with each other. The mythology / sci-fi aspect has never been a big part of the show. I dont know why people dont get that.
  • + Its about the journey, not the end.
  • + This was after all a JJ Abrams show. What did you expect if nothing short of characters and a love story? Felicity. Alias. Mission Impossible III, Star Trek. FRINGE. All have an aspect of a love story at the center of the show. Thats JJ Abrams. Get used to it.
  • + You dont need all the so-called answers in order to enjoy the show. Did Star Wars explain what the Force was? Did Battlestar Galactica explain how Cylons rally grew into humans or any of the other mythologies? They didnt need to.
  • + I absolutely loved the ending, mostly because had I been the writer, I would have written exactly the same ending, right down to the last scene. That scene alone made the last 6 years all worth it. Wow.

I also believe that that the writers did not lie when they said that they knew the ending right from the get go. I dont buy the notion that they made it up as they went along, as some have said. Thats why the original cast was in the final scene. If you notice, none of the characters that later joined the show (including Ben) were in that last scene. That scene was nothing short of genius.

Another reason why the finale rocked my socks was the idea of eastern religious mysticism and mythology. The idea that one can not truly pass on until the soul has been purified and is in a “zen” state. This is true in almost every religion, and that has always been a major part of the show. Anyone remember Eko? He was the most spiritual character in the show, and the most powerful one.

In closing, LOST will go down as one of the best shows on TV, ever. Right up there with the Battlestar Galactica finale. Those that dont see it that way either never really got the show, what it was about, or were misinformed - and for that they will never be satisfied.

Good review, until the last paragraph, where I find you a little bit patronizing. There’s a lot of people who don’t see it as one of the best shows on TV (including myself), because they simply didn’t like it. There were good moments, but overall, it didn’t work for me. It has nothing to do with the fact that I didn’t “get it”.

I got the ending, I understood everything they were trying to do. I just didn’t like the story they told and the way they told it. ;)

@ Faskil: How dare you think my review is not up to par… Maybe you didnt *get* my review!!!! ;-)

Dont get me wrong the show is not without its faults. For example, the finale was long, laboured and boring. I felt the last “epic” battle between Jack & Flocke was not necessary and made to satisfy the “Hollywood” type crowd and to sell more ads for the network.

A lot of the episodes in the series were clearly space fillers. This is after all a TV show and TV show has business needs to fullfill, sell ads etc.

But all in all, Im satisfied with the show and how it ended.

Turns out, there were two copies of the Mona Lisa painted on the very same day.

Museum experts are in the process of stripping away a cover of black over-paint which, when fully removed, will reveal the youthfulness of the subject they say. The final area of over-paint will come off in the next few days.

The original “Mona Lisa” hangs in the Louvre but the sitter looks older than her years as the varnish is cracked. The painting is so fragile that restoration or cleaning is deemed too risky. The Prado version, however, will show the sitter as she was: a young woman in her early 20s.

In August of 1865, a Colonel P.H. Anderson of Big Spring, Tennessee, wrote to his former slave, Jourdan Anderson, and requested that he come back to work on his farm. Jourdan — who, since being emancipated, had moved to Ohio, found paid work, and was now supporting his family — responded spectacularly by way of this letter.

A couple of dissenting views on my opinion of the megaupload shutdown:

    Jonathan Coulton:

Along with all the illegal stuff happening on MegaUpload was some amount of completely legal stuff. People used MegaUpload to send large files around. Some number of those files were personal files owned by the people sending them. I have no idea what the ratio was, and probably it would be impossible to figure that out with any certainty, but let’s stipulate that it was a very large percentage of illegal activity, and only a very tiny percentage of the users were there for anything other than downloading content that they didn’t buy. Still, today that tiny percentage had something taken away from them, without warning, maybe just a service they liked using, but maybe a piece of digital media that belonged to them - if they uploaded something and didn’t keep a copy, that thing is now gone.

Julian Sanchez also has a good post about the larger SOPA / PIPA debate.

Thomas Friedman, whom I have had issues with in the past, is spot on in his latest column: The End of Average. In which he argues that workers and companies simply can not survive in this economy by merely being average.

In the past, workers with average skills, doing an average job, could earn an average lifestyle. But, today, average is officially over. Being average just won’t earn you what it used to. It can’t when so many more employers have so much more access to so much more above average cheap foreign labor, cheap robotics, cheap software, cheap automation and cheap genius. Therefore, everyone needs to find their extra — their unique value contribution that makes them stand out in whatever is their field of employment. Average is over.

This is the best news in a long time. When the Feds shut down the scumbag website Meaupload, they seized “Shotguns, a Rolls Royce Phantom and millions of dollars” from the owners. That Rolls Royce Phantom was paid for by me and countless other copyright owners like labels and artists who’s work they illegally shared on their site. These scumbags make money off our content by selling ads around the download links. I cant wait for the same thing to happen to other sites like YouSendIt, WeTransfer and countless others.
