New friskyCamera - Nikon D700

September 28th, 2008

After lusting after it for more than a month - I finally took the plunge this week and bought myself a brand new Nikon D700. Ive had my previous camera, the Nikon D70, since 2004 so it was well beyond the time for an upgrade. First impressions of the camera:

  • It feels like a real camera. Its heavy and its extremely well built.
  • The huge LCD display is extremely sharp and clear.
  • The “click” noise of the shutter release is extremely pleasing - like a film camera.
  • I bought the camera with the Nikkor 24-120mm VR lens - which is absolutely awesome so far.
  • The low-light sensitivity of the camera is top notch. So far Ive only gone up to ISO1250 (out of a possible ISO 6400) and dont notice too much noise. The noise issue at high ISOs has been a huge problem for Nikon and Im glad they have improved on this a lot.
  • The D-Active lighting system is simply stunning. I can take low-light and shadow shots at f5.6 and above and still get amazing detail. Blown away.
  • I never quite understood the appeal of a full-frame FX sensor. Now I do.

Here are some test shots right out of the camera - absolutely no post-processing was done to these shots. Im amazed at the quality of the shots right our of the camera.
D700 Test Shots
Outside my flats. It was cloudy and the light wasnt too optimal. D700 came thru perfectly at ISO 200. Click for large size at Flickr.

D700 Test Shots
This was taken in my basement car garage of my flats. Its really dark there and I have never been able to take a clear shot there without a tripod. This shows the good performance of the D700 at ISO 1250. Virtually no noise! Really amazed. Click for larger size at Flickr.

And just for fun - I took a self-portrait of moi with a new getFrisky! T-Shirt. Click for larger size.

Thats all the shots I have to share so far. I have a few others but they are just me messing around… Im going on a 10-day trip starting Tuesday so expect loads of great shots from me soon… I love this thing!

What’s the distortion at the corners of the garage pic?

Ingo: Its not distortion, its vignetting. That’s a trademark of mine - I love vignetting and you will notice that a lot in all my photography. It happens when the light going into the lens is very little, and I add to that effect by putting the lens cap on, even in low light. Love it. :-)

The low light capabilities of the D700 are amazing. It’s a fantastic camera.

Totally insane quality. There is nothing like a full frame…

Sadly, the money spiral goes and goes, and now is the lenses the ones to upgrade… and those are the real expensive thing in photography…

This “chromatic ab.” is the same as in my D80 50-135 Kit:

Fortunately, shooting in RAW and then using the Nikon’s Capture NX software, those colour things disappear, in a better way (an fully automatically) than using Photoshop.

countach Yep… Like I said, this is straight out of the camera, and not going thru even the NX software or anything… It truly is amazing straight out of the camera and not too much light flares etc… I havent yet used Capture NX as Im a complete Lightroom Photoshop CS3.

A list of medieval occupations. Like this gem:

stewsman - probably a brothel keeper - “since the words stew and stewholder both mean a bawd, I’m guessing that a stewsman would be a brothel-keeper as well. Whether bawdry counts as a criminal activity varies at different times and places.”

An upcoming book by explores the French way of raising children. WSJ spoke to the author. Amen to this:

One of the keys to this education is the simple act of learning how to wait. It is why the French babies I meet mostly sleep through the night from two or three months old. Their parents don’t pick them up the second they start crying, allowing the babies to learn how to fall back asleep. It is also why French toddlers will sit happily at a restaurant. Rather than snacking all day like American children, they mostly have to wait until mealtime to eat. (French kids consistently have three meals a day and one snack around 4 p.m.)

This is despicable. US forces attack once from the sky and then attack again once mourners and rescuers arrive.

Turns out, there were two copies of the Mona Lisa painted on the very same day.

Museum experts are in the process of stripping away a cover of black over-paint which, when fully removed, will reveal the youthfulness of the subject they say. The final area of over-paint will come off in the next few days.

The original “Mona Lisa” hangs in the Louvre but the sitter looks older than her years as the varnish is cracked. The painting is so fragile that restoration or cleaning is deemed too risky. The Prado version, however, will show the sitter as she was: a young woman in her early 20s.

In August of 1865, a Colonel P.H. Anderson of Big Spring, Tennessee, wrote to his former slave, Jourdan Anderson, and requested that he come back to work on his farm. Jourdan — who, since being emancipated, had moved to Ohio, found paid work, and was now supporting his family — responded spectacularly by way of this letter.

A couple of dissenting views on my opinion of the megaupload shutdown:

    Jonathan Coulton:

Along with all the illegal stuff happening on MegaUpload was some amount of completely legal stuff. People used MegaUpload to send large files around. Some number of those files were personal files owned by the people sending them. I have no idea what the ratio was, and probably it would be impossible to figure that out with any certainty, but let’s stipulate that it was a very large percentage of illegal activity, and only a very tiny percentage of the users were there for anything other than downloading content that they didn’t buy. Still, today that tiny percentage had something taken away from them, without warning, maybe just a service they liked using, but maybe a piece of digital media that belonged to them - if they uploaded something and didn’t keep a copy, that thing is now gone.

Julian Sanchez also has a good post about the larger SOPA / PIPA debate.

Thomas Friedman, whom I have had issues with in the past, is spot on in his latest column: The End of Average. In which he argues that workers and companies simply can not survive in this economy by merely being average.

In the past, workers with average skills, doing an average job, could earn an average lifestyle. But, today, average is officially over. Being average just won’t earn you what it used to. It can’t when so many more employers have so much more access to so much more above average cheap foreign labor, cheap robotics, cheap software, cheap automation and cheap genius. Therefore, everyone needs to find their extra — their unique value contribution that makes them stand out in whatever is their field of employment. Average is over.
