How Obama is blowing it

Obama is blowing it and will likely lose in November. Thats a pretty bold title on this post isnt it? Let me begin by saying that I hope that Im wrong in this one. And if I am, come November I will be happy to eat these words - but lately Ive had quite a good track record of predicting politics and I want to share my feelings on Obama now.

If youre an adamant supporter of Obama as I am, Im sure Im not the only one that has this uneasy feeling right about now - about how Obama is going to blow it in November. You’d think this would be a no-brainer: Barack Obama: a fresh face, a Harvard Law Professor, young, talented, charismatic people-person, with bold new ideas promising this thing called hope. And of yea, he can give awesome inspiring speeches too! Someone that is born to be a leader, someone that actually has the right judgment and temperament to be a leader in this important time in the world. Someone that actually looks like the rest of the world in that he is not white.

That was in the primaries. And sadly, the Obama that we saw in the primaries is long gone. The Obama that we’re stuck with now is a calculating politician that votes for FISA after promising that he will not just a few months ago and thinks its OK for the American government to spy on its own people after years of criticizing Bush for doing the same. The Obama that we’re stuck with now is for drilling for more oil even though he knows that its a brainless idea: a crack addict does not get off his addiction by doing more crack. The Obama that we’re stuck with now says that he wont bring the Iraq war to an end until at least 2 more years (after promising that he will do so within 6 months in the primaries).

This post-primary Obama looks more and more like a brighter, more intelligent version of Bush and McCain. This Obama tip toes around the idea of key issues like women’s right to choose, economy, the war, oil drilling, FISA. Where is the Obama that we saw during the primaries? Where is the Obama that promised us real hope and change? This is not the change that the American primary voters hoped for.

Obama is therefore blowing it and will probably lose in November. Now before you say, “surely the American people would’nt be so stupid to vote for McCain now.” Really? Dont be so sure. Remember these are the same people that voted for Bush in 2004 against John Kerry, a decorated war hero who was smart and had every reason to win the election. These Republicans play dirty and are tough, and here I thought Obama will actually bring it to them and beat them at their game - but here he is, sitting there taking it like a pussy with his “different kind of politics” bullshit. America is not ready for a serious adult debate. You have to treat people like children and rub the other guy’s face in the mud, and Im not sure Obama has it in him to rub McCain’s face in the mud - something I am sure Hillary and Bill Clinton would never have hesitated to do if Hillary was the nominee. I cant help but wonder if Obama has it in him to really fight for this and play the republicans how they like to play: dirty. And I also cant help but think that he needed Hillary as his VP now more than ever. If he doesnt, he will lose. Its as simple as that.

And Im saying this now so that its on paper: If McCain becomes president - we’re in for a hellish ride. You thought Bush was bad… wait till you guys get a load of this old fuck.

A pair of scientists looked at the rate at which the complexity of life increases and then extrapolated back to a point of zero complexity. Its around 10 billion years. Turns out life might be even older than Earth itself.

However, if life takes 10 billion years to evolve to the level of complexity associated with humans, then we may be among the first, if not the first, intelligent civilisation in our galaxy. And this is the reason why when we gaze into space, we do not yet see signs of other intelligent species.

The White House was completely gutted and refurbished in 1950. Great photo essay!

Experts called the third floor of the White House “an outstanding example of a firetrap.” The result of a federally commissioned report found the mansion’s plumbing “makeshift and unsanitary,” while “the structural deterioration [was] in ‘appalling degree,’ and threatening complete collapse.” The congressional commission on the matter was considering the option of abandoning the structure altogether in favor of a built-from-scratch mansion, but President Truman lobbied for the restoration.

The area looked different than where we trained because we’re in Pakistan now. There are the lights, the city. There’s a golf course. And we’re, This is some serious Navy SEAL shit we’re going to do. This is so badass. My foot hit the ground and I was still running [the Bush quote] in my head. I don’t care if I die right now. This is so awesome. There was concern, but no fear.

An extra-ordinary piece of journalism in the March issue of esquire on the man that pulled the trigger on Bin Laden. This is riveting, must-read!

So while Obama was telling the world that “a decade of war is ending” and that “all souls on Earth shall have equal access to happiness” he was busy waging war and killing… Esquire takes a look at Obama’s double standards on war and how he is the first president in history to target individuals with no regard for the rule of law and UN conventions.

Sure, we as a nation have always killed people. A lot of people. But no president has ever waged war by killing enemies one by one, targeting them individually for execution, wherever they are. The Obama administration has taken pains to tell us, over and over again, that they are careful, scrupulous of our laws, and determined to avoid the loss of collateral, innocent lives. They’re careful because when it comes to waging war on individuals, the distinction between war and murder becomes a fine one. Especially when, on occasion, the individuals we target are Americans and when, in one instance, the collateral damage was an American boy.

Lets not kid ourselves here. The problem isnt Obama, or Bush, or even a “President Romney.” The problem is American society and economy that lives and thrives on war and killing.

A great lesson for those of you who want to learn more about how focal length affects your subjects and perception in photography. Ive always found the “sweet spot” to be around 5 feet and 35mm, but of course it all depends on the subject and the environment. But anything less than 35mm will make your subjects look weird.

How come I never thought of this: In the future, we will all get our mail and packages from drones. The author explains it thusly:

Here’s a simplified version of what I’m talking about:

I put package onto a landing pad at my home.
Drone arrives, takes package and flies away.
Drone delivers package to landing pad at delivery location.

Great idea, and I do think this can / will happen probably within the next 25 years. With the advent of self-driving cars, there’s nothing stopping UPS to deliver mail using those self-driving vehicles, or drones.
