Coming in 2008 :: friskyRecords

I think its not a secret anymore that I’m launching a music label in a few months. friskyRecords will be an offshoot of friskyRadio and I hope to release only the best progressive house and electronic dance music (EDM) on it. After months of being pretty tight lipped about it I will finally start to talk openly about it here in the coming days and weeks as we come close to our first release. More on that later.

There are tons and tons of labels out there at the moment and only a few that are relevant. I am determined to make friskyRecords amongst the most respected and loved EDM label out there. Technology makes it easy for anyone to set up a label and start releasing just about anything they wish these days, and that unfortunately has led to some incredibly terrible labels out there. And after almost 7 years of frisky being on the air, I am only now launching the frisky music label. I feel that I had to let the frisky brand mature first - let it gain respect and credibility, and then tackle the label. Just like friskyRadio already is the top independent EDM radio station on the web, I am confident that friskyRecords will be the top EDM label.

friskyRadio really started to blow up around late 2003. Back then, I would repeatedly get emails from fans and artists alike, urging me to launch a frisky label. They were actually surprised that frisky didnt have one. They used to say, “Everyone else has one, why dont you?” I have never been one to follow trends so I would just tell that maybe one day… But to be honest I didnt want to deal with the added workload and stress and scrutiny that comes with being the Big Bad Music Label. I ran the station alone back then; from the web site to the streaming server to the day to day admin stuff for friskyRadio - so without cloning myself there was just no way to deal with all the added crap that comes out of running a business. Make no mistake: Labels, after all, are a business. And in business, if you fuck up once you’re done. So I wanted to make sure that if I ever started a label - I would be able to give it my 1000% attention that it deserved. frisky is, after all my baby that Im incredibly proud of. The frisky brand has taken 6+ years to get this far - I wasnt going to fuck it up just because I wanted to fuel my ego and launch a label just because I could, just like I launched the stream so long ago: I launched the radio stream just because I could.

Why am I doing it now? Well, a major part of the reason is that I now have two incredible bitches that help out with the day-to-day business of running friskyRadio. Ira and Papi are two immensely dedicated friends that are always ready and willing to help out. Im glad that they are officially part of the friskyStaff now and are as much part of friskyRadio as I am. Together - we have been able to increase the friskyRadio listenership 40% in 2007. I can say without a doubt that without their help and dedication, we wouldnt be where we are now. Ira is the friskyRecords Label Manager and honestly he’s a total rock star. The way he has been able to come in from day one and really take charge and take ownership of the project without any reward or payment whatsoever is beyond belief. I am truly honoured to be working with these fine people: My Bitches!

I also have been lucky to have people that I trust in the industry that I have been able to go to for advise and help on the project. You know who you are and without them I wouldnt have been able to get this project off the ground.

Our first release is coming up in February 2008. Its a project thats literally more than a year in the making and its finally on the home stretch. There have been challenges but Im glad to say we have overcome them and we’re getting ready to release it. It will be a two-phased release. Phase 1 will be a CD and Phase 2 an all-digital release. I can not wait to get it out and start working on subsequent releases. friskyRecords.com will also be live soon so keep an eye out for it.

    Turns out, there were two copies of the Mona Lisa painted on the very same day.

    Museum experts are in the process of stripping away a cover of black over-paint which, when fully removed, will reveal the youthfulness of the subject they say. The final area of over-paint will come off in the next few days.

    The original “Mona Lisa” hangs in the Louvre but the sitter looks older than her years as the varnish is cracked. The painting is so fragile that restoration or cleaning is deemed too risky. The Prado version, however, will show the sitter as she was: a young woman in her early 20s.

    In August of 1865, a Colonel P.H. Anderson of Big Spring, Tennessee, wrote to his former slave, Jourdan Anderson, and requested that he come back to work on his farm. Jourdan — who, since being emancipated, had moved to Ohio, found paid work, and was now supporting his family — responded spectacularly by way of this letter.

    A couple of dissenting views on my opinion of the megaupload shutdown:

    Jonathan Coulton:

    Along with all the illegal stuff happening on MegaUpload was some amount of completely legal stuff. People used MegaUpload to send large files around. Some number of those files were personal files owned by the people sending them. I have no idea what the ratio was, and probably it would be impossible to figure that out with any certainty, but let’s stipulate that it was a very large percentage of illegal activity, and only a very tiny percentage of the users were there for anything other than downloading content that they didn’t buy. Still, today that tiny percentage had something taken away from them, without warning, maybe just a service they liked using, but maybe a piece of digital media that belonged to them - if they uploaded something and didn’t keep a copy, that thing is now gone.

    Julian Sanchez also has a good post about the larger SOPA / PIPA debate.

    Thomas Friedman, whom I have had issues with in the past, is spot on in his latest column: The End of Average. In which he argues that workers and companies simply can not survive in this economy by merely being average.

    In the past, workers with average skills, doing an average job, could earn an average lifestyle. But, today, average is officially over. Being average just won’t earn you what it used to. It can’t when so many more employers have so much more access to so much more above average cheap foreign labor, cheap robotics, cheap software, cheap automation and cheap genius. Therefore, everyone needs to find their extra — their unique value contribution that makes them stand out in whatever is their field of employment. Average is over.

    This is the best news in a long time. When the Feds shut down the scumbag website Meaupload, they seized “Shotguns, a Rolls Royce Phantom and millions of dollars” from the owners. That Rolls Royce Phantom was paid for by me and countless other copyright owners like labels and artists who’s work they illegally shared on their site. These scumbags make money off our content by selling ads around the download links. I cant wait for the same thing to happen to other sites like YouSendIt, WeTransfer and countless others.
