Trust me… It aint the camera

Lots of things piss me off… Actually a whole lot of things like that Monkey in the White House, Stupid People, thieves, puppies… Ah heck what doesn’t piss me off?

So lets talk about whats been pissing me off lately.

I love how some people, when they look at photography, whether it be mine or someone else’s, the first thing they will say is “What camera did you take that with?” Trust me… It aint the camera. Its my mad skillz yo. Sure you can buy yourself a $10,000 Leica M8 but still come up with crappy shots. Just like buying a Ferrari wont necessarily get you laid. Well, maybe thats not such a good example, as buying a $200,000 Ferrari can get anyone laid.

My point is this. Some of the greatest photographers in history have taken timeless shots with pin hole or other point-n-shoot cameras. Photography is so much more than how many megapixels your camera has or how good your C-41 process is. So assuming that its all the camera when you see a great shot is simply a slap in the face of the photographer. I mean I have taken some horrible shots with the same camera I have taken some good shots with - so there’s your argument.

This also includes those people whos only feedback to a mix played on friskyRadio is to ask for the set’s tracklisting. Im sick and tired of these people that have no respect for the hours and effort (not to mention money) it takes the DJ to compile the list of tracks for a given set and rather than applauding their work, all they do is selfishly ask for the tracklisting so they can go and get those tracks and put them in their sets. Get a life and get your own tracks!

Be a friend - appreciate the art and the artist. Not the equipment.

    Agree down to the last T!!

    These days everyone is obsessed by megapixels and this and that, which ends up consuming the actual process of shooting. I dropped out of this race 6 months ago, sold my Canon 1ds/1dmkII and all my lenses and settled for a Leica M6 with 50mm lens. This has been my primary camera and i feel it has pushed my photography so much more than it was when i had 7 canon L lenses and 2 bodies.

    Get out there, ignore the damn tech nerds and just shoot (oh but keep buying more digital please, it means the price of “old” film cameras will keep on falling)

    Agreed, thats why im not going to buy a better camera than I have now. I had the same with the cybershot I owned before, I wanted to get better and get nice photos by using that camera than upgrade. BUT off course the SLR I have now just is sexier!! :P

By now Im sure you all know about the .10 second victory that Phelps had over Serbian swimmer Cavic last night in Beijing. Click here to see a frame by frame view of how he did it. I didnt watch it of course because Im boycotting the Olympics - but I wish I had seen this swim live.

Whats amazing is how well the Silver medalist is taking it. I have to admit if this was me, I would have been devastated, having lost the gold medal by such a narrow margin. He wrote in his blog today:

“Success!! I did it!!! I won an Olympic medal everybody! On winning a SILVER medal: I am completely happy, and still in complete disbelief that I was able to achieve this feat! I’m not joking… It’s a tough loss, but I’m on cloud nine. I congratulated Phelps and his coach Bob Bowman. I’m just glad the race was fun to watch for everyone. It was a pleasure for me, really.”

Thats how one becomes a champion - being gracious in defeat.
