No. More. Social. Networks!

July 7th, 2007

Seriously how many social networks does one have to join in order to feel loved and connected to your “friends.” I dont even know 99.9999% of the people that call me a friend in most social network sites. Do we really need to know that much about other people? Do we really that much of a connection with others?

There’s twitter, Pownce, Jaiku and countless others that basically do the same thing: tell others what you are currently doing or thinking. I have to admit that Im a bit of a twitter junkie but do we really need a gazillion other sites like it?

There seems to be a social network site for everything these days. Are you a sex offender or a bit of a mental retard? Then MySpace is your best bet. Do you like colour? Try ColourLovers (I shit you not, its a real site for “colour lovers”! WTF!) Like to wear clothes, as opposed to the rest of us that like to run around naked? Then you belong at trendmill.com. And there are various others in this field as well. Design snob? There’s my favourite Virb.com. There’s Chess.com for Chess geeks. LinkedIn is the boring intellectual dork in the social network sites party that no one wants to talk to; even though its a great networking tool to get jobs etc. Facebook thinks its just better than all the rest by closing its site to everyone other than its members. Snobs are we? Kinda like AOL was back in the day. Orkut started it all back in 2001. There’s Tagged for teens. . . .I can go on and on.

Whats next? A site for potheads? One for Lovers of beef jerky? What about one for goats? I know there’s a site for pet lovers but I mean goats! How can you go wrong with that? Goats. Come on, someone make a social network site for goat-lovers before I do!

yeah, too many social networks! Too many invitations went into my mailbox. And what did I do? Deleting all of them!

MySpace? OMG, that sucks big time!

Watch the trailer for JJ Abrams’ new TV show Revolution. Looks good but then so did Alcatraz, which turned out to be a dud. Lets hope this lives up to the hype.

RIP so-called Social Readers. The Facebook Social Reader is the worst piece of crap ever. You click on an article your friend supposedly read and instead of taking you to the story, it takes you to an app. Thats when I closed the app and never went to the story. I wasnt the only one.

Fascinating story of American Airlines’ AAirPass - an all-you-can-fly elite program that you can purchase for $350,000. Considering how much you can travel (unlimited, first class), I think $350K is a great deal if you have the money. And time I guess.

The San Pelligrino 50 Best Restaurants in the World list is better than the Michelin list, and their 2012 ratings are right on. Per Se at 6 and not surprisingly Eleven Madison Park jumps from 24 to 10! It is that good. I expect it to be in the Top 5 next year for sure. Another one to watch out for next year: Atera in New York.

Couldnt agree with this more… Apple should buy Foursquare and Square:

To summarize: after the deal, Apple will immediately become a giant payments company, with an installation base that is expected to encompass half of all mobile devices sold. The company will have the best local search abilities, far exceeding any existing recommendation engine. And due to its enormous reach, it will possess a payment system that merchants will line up to support.

Perfectly boring still life objects made incredibly NSFW. Quite awesome how at first you see the shots, you dont see anything but erotica. But then when you realise what it is, you have to try and see anything but the every-day object.
