Dr frisky’s Random Post of Wisdom :: Lets Take a Deep Breath

August 26th, 2006

First I brought back the Crush of the Week from the dead. Now its time to resurrect an age-old tradition on friskyGeek: The Random Post of Wisdom. Youre thinking what? frisky and wisdom? That dont fit yo. Save it, for I am wise beyond…er… Well, Ive read a couple of books in my life. I have previously spoken about women and WMDs, now I tackle today’s hot topic: [drumm roll…] Terror in the Skies.

My dear Children of the World (especially all you White People),

Please for the love of god freedom take a chill pill and relax!

August 16: You refused to let a plane off the ground until some “suspicious passengers” were escorted off the plane. On the same day a passenger jet from London to Washington was diverted to Boston because a woman on board was feeling claustrophobic. August 15: You kicked a man off the plane for simply praying.

August 15: Droppped iPod (yes iPod) causes terror alert. Jesus God-Damned-Fucking-Christ!!! I mean COME ON!

August 18: Plane diverted to Italy when someone found something scribbled on an air sickness bag.

August 21: Iraqi Peace Activist harrased at JFK for wearing T-Shirt with Arabic on it. “you can’t wear a t-shirt with Arabic script and come to an airport. It is like wearing a t-shirt that reads “I am a robber” and going to a bank”.”

August 22: A flight from Luton Airport to Majorca was delayed as police inspected an aircraft after cabin crew found a “scribbled note” on board.

August 24: A flight to Mumbai was diverted back to Amsterdam, escorted by F-16s and some “suspects of Indian/Pakistani” decent arrested. The men were simply “moving around.” When the fuck did that become a fucking CRIME?

I can go on and on…

The point of terrorism is to cause terror. Sometimes it is to make a political point, to profess eternal love for “God,” sometimes its because you cant get laid in this life and thus want to spend eternity with 72 virgins… The point is this: The act of the terrorism is not the end but simply a beginning of their statement. The target of the attacks is not the victims of the attack, but all of us. Us, normal, civilian, everyday people. It is us that have to live with the fear of being the next targets of the Big Bad Terrorist.

By acting like pathetic cry babies youre doing exactly what the terrorists want. Lets grow some brains and think rationally for a second. We should just go about our life and stop being wussies, because the chances of us being a target of an attack are less than winning big at the lottery.

The blame for this fear mongering should also go to the politians, be they Democrats, Republicans, Labour or Conservative. All are guilty of exploiting these times of fear and unease to further their political agenda. The entire London Bomb Plot was way overblown and the more we learn of the facts, the more we realise that the plot was nothing but an idea at best - I mean most of the “terrorists” didnt even have a fucking passport!!!

The War on Terrorism is not a war of bombs but a war to win hearts and minds. And everytime you single out an Arab-looking person on a plane for acting suspiciously, or an Asian for fiddling with his cell phone - you make it worse. Stop and think for a minute before crying wolf. Being Asian is not a crime. Being Muslim is not a crime. Being Arab is not a crime. But hot arab women - wearing those viels should be. But I digress…

Tune in next time, when we will discuss the curious mating rituals of lizards in the Antartic.

A pair of scientists looked at the rate at which the complexity of life increases and then extrapolated back to a point of zero complexity. Its around 10 billion years. Turns out life might be even older than Earth itself.

However, if life takes 10 billion years to evolve to the level of complexity associated with humans, then we may be among the first, if not the first, intelligent civilisation in our galaxy. And this is the reason why when we gaze into space, we do not yet see signs of other intelligent species.

The White House was completely gutted and refurbished in 1950. Great photo essay!

Experts called the third floor of the White House “an outstanding example of a firetrap.” The result of a federally commissioned report found the mansion’s plumbing “makeshift and unsanitary,” while “the structural deterioration [was] in ‘appalling degree,’ and threatening complete collapse.” The congressional commission on the matter was considering the option of abandoning the structure altogether in favor of a built-from-scratch mansion, but President Truman lobbied for the restoration.

The area looked different than where we trained because we’re in Pakistan now. There are the lights, the city. There’s a golf course. And we’re, This is some serious Navy SEAL shit we’re going to do. This is so badass. My foot hit the ground and I was still running [the Bush quote] in my head. I don’t care if I die right now. This is so awesome. There was concern, but no fear.

An extra-ordinary piece of journalism in the March issue of esquire on the man that pulled the trigger on Bin Laden. This is riveting, must-read!

Imagine at some point that you go to the doctor for a physical, they do a blood draw but also a cheek swab and a few days later, you get a link to a site that shows you everything that is right and wrong with you, and can then help figure out how to make things better. Syapse is trying to do just that. Sign me up!

So while Obama was telling the world that “a decade of war is ending” and that “all souls on Earth shall have equal access to happiness” he was busy waging war and killing… Esquire takes a look at Obama’s double standards on war and how he is the first president in history to target individuals with no regard for the rule of law and UN conventions.

Sure, we as a nation have always killed people. A lot of people. But no president has ever waged war by killing enemies one by one, targeting them individually for execution, wherever they are. The Obama administration has taken pains to tell us, over and over again, that they are careful, scrupulous of our laws, and determined to avoid the loss of collateral, innocent lives. They’re careful because when it comes to waging war on individuals, the distinction between war and murder becomes a fine one. Especially when, on occasion, the individuals we target are Americans and when, in one instance, the collateral damage was an American boy.

Lets not kid ourselves here. The problem isnt Obama, or Bush, or even a “President Romney.” The problem is American society and economy that lives and thrives on war and killing.

A great lesson for those of you who want to learn more about how focal length affects your subjects and perception in photography. Ive always found the “sweet spot” to be around 5 feet and 35mm, but of course it all depends on the subject and the environment. But anything less than 35mm will make your subjects look weird.

How come I never thought of this: In the future, we will all get our mail and packages from drones. The author explains it thusly:

Here’s a simplified version of what I’m talking about:

I put package onto a landing pad at my home.
Drone arrives, takes package and flies away.
Drone delivers package to landing pad at delivery location.

Great idea, and I do think this can / will happen probably within the next 25 years. With the advent of self-driving cars, there’s nothing stopping UPS to deliver mail using those self-driving vehicles, or drones.
